Data Explorer Suite for QuickBooks Installation FAQs:

1.  Installing Data Explorer Suite from a network or mapped drive causes problems in the install.
This is most likely a permission problem with the network or mapped drive.  The easiest solution is to copy the install program onto a local drive and then the execute install program  from the local drive.

2.  Installing MS JVM (Microsoft Java Virtual Machine) on Windows 7
MS JVM is a required for Data Explorer Suite.  The Data Explorer Suite attempts to install the MS JVM as Microsoft is no longer legally allowed to include it with Windows or support it as it had with previous Windows releases.  When presented with following dialog during installation:

MS JVM
  1. Click the "Don't show this message again" checkbox.
  2. Click "Run program" button.

Running Data Explorer Suite for QuickBooks FAQs:

1.  Data Explorer Suite programs will not run from a network or mapped drive.
By default, .NET security prevents .NET programs (.exe's and .dll's) from being executed from a remote computer.  This greatly reduces the possibility of attacks by viruses, Trojan horse programs, etc.  We recommend that the program be installed on a local drive on the local computer and the program be executed from that local drive.

2.  Can I change the Sample Reports?
While you cannot change the sample reports per se, you can modify them by selecting new members from the dimensions, revising Views, creating new Views and then save them to a new file.  These new Analysis files will have a .c3 extension and can be accessed from the Saved Analyses list in Data Navigator.  You can also access these new Analyses files by a Double-Click on the file name from Windows Explorer.

3.  I get an error message when opening a Sample Report using the my own company file.
The Sample Analyses were designed to work correctly with the QuickBooks Sample Company.  When you use them with your company, there may be dimensions or dimension members that do not exist in your use of QuickBooks.  These dimensions or dimension members which were in the QuickBooks sample company but not in your company will be noted by DES Data Explorer.  You can safely allow DES Data Explorer to exclude them.  You can then add any other members or views for your own analysis.

4.  I see scroll bars at the bottom and side of a 3D Bar chart.  What are they?
3D Bar charts can be rotated and tilted to obtain a better view of the data.  This change of perspective can be accomplished by using the two scroll bars or by dragging the image with the mouse button clicked.

5. I get an error message when attempting to Extract Data using Data Navigator.
It is possible for an accounting system database to not have data to extract to create some of the Data Explorer Suite cubes.  If this is the case, you will get a message stating that the cube cannot be processed and will not be created.  An example might be a business with no employees or with no employees added to the QuickBooks database.  In that case, when Data Navigator attempts to extract employee data it will encounter a situation where the Employee Hours cube cannot be created.  Similar situations can occur with no data for Vendors, Items and Customers.

6. I am unable to drag and drop to copy a member into the Selected Member panel or get an error when I try to double click select a dimension member.
Click on the blank area of the Selected Members panel to unselect any members in the Selected Members panel, then you should be able to use drag and drop or double click selection.

7. When I use a hierarchy that has Parent and Children members like the Item hierarchy in the Item dimension, sometime there is a child member with the same name as the parent.
QuickBooks allows for members of lists (Item, Customer, etc.) to be both parents of other members and to be assigned to a tranaction. For example, if there is a item ,Wood Doors, which has several childrens such as Interior and Exterior, QuickBooks allows for Wood Doors: Interior, Wood Doors:Exterior and Wood Doors to be associated with a sales transaction.  Therefore, for the parent Wood Doors to show the subtotal of its children, we add a child of the same name to represent the occasions when Wood Door is used as a child.

Data Issues FAQs:

1. Data from DES Sample Analyses for sample company do not match the data reported by QuickBooks reports.
In some cases the measures reported in QuickBooks reports for an Invoice item are incorrect. This happens when a line in an Invoice does not contain an Item from the Item List but does contain a quantity, rate or amount. This can happen when an Invoice line is edited. QuickBooks reports will not recognize that line of the invoice and not report the values associated with that line. DES, however, reports that line with an Item called None.

2. Data in my P & L cube is terribly wrong.
As mentioned previously, DES adds entries in the Item, Customer, Class and Vendor lists to account for missing data allowed by QuickBooks. Because of this, the user cannot have added an entry for "None" in these lists. If you have done so, please rename that entry to some other name than "None" otherwise double counting can occur in the P & L cube.
